Este p�jaro carpintero, de mucho menor tama�o que el carpintero negro, se ha observado en el bosque de coigue cerca de la costa. El pit�o, por su tama�o, su plumaje tipo castellano, y su manera de volar, bajo y ondulante es muy f�cil de identificar y, a�n sin tenerlo a la vista, su presencia se detecta desde lejos por su llamada fuerte que se escucha en el bosque como "pi-t�o, pi-t�o", que le da su nombre com�n. Adem�s del comportamiento propio de los carpinteros de buscar su alimento dentro de la corteza de los �rboles, esta especie frecuenta tambi�n el suelo en busca de insectos y sus larvas.
